Backlog Accounting & Records Catch-Up
When books fall months or years behind, VAT returns, Corporate Tax obligations, audits, bank requests and management decisions all become harder. We rebuild incomplete or outdated accounting records from source documents, reconcile them properly, and bring your books up to date so your business is ready for tax filings, audit, licence renewals and informed decision-making.

- 3
Recording & Reconciliation
We record transactions, reconcile bank and key balances, and resolve differences and unexplained items period by period.
- 4
Review & Handover
We deliver updated ledgers, trial balances and reports, highlight any compliance issues found, and set up ongoing bookkeeping if required.
Technical FAQs
What is backlog accounting?
Backlog accounting means bringing books of account up to date for past periods that were not recorded, were recorded incompletely, or were recorded incorrectly. It involves reconstructing transactions from source documents, reconciling balances, and producing reliable records for each outstanding period.
How far back can you update our books?
We can work on multiple past financial periods. The scope depends on how far behind the records are and on the documents available. We usually start from the last reliable closing balance and work forward so each period carries correct opening balances into the next.
What documents do you need from us?
Typically bank statements for all accounts, sales and purchase invoices, receipts, payroll records, loan and lease agreements, previous financial statements or trial balances, and VAT returns filed. Where documents are missing, we identify the gaps and advise on how to obtain replacements or support the entries.
Why does backlog accounting matter for VAT and Corporate Tax?
VAT returns and Corporate Tax positions should be supported by proper accounting records. If books are behind, it is difficult to confirm that returns were correct or to prepare future filings. Updating the books helps identify differences early so they can be addressed through the appropriate correction process.
What happens if the updated books show errors in VAT returns already filed?
We will highlight any differences between the updated records and the returns previously submitted. Depending on the nature and amount of the error, a correction in a later return or a voluntary disclosure may be required, and we can support you with that process.
Can you work with our existing accounting software?
Yes. We can update records in your current system, or, if records were kept in spreadsheets or an unsuitable tool, we can help move the business onto a proper accounting system as part of the catch-up.
How long does a backlog accounting project take?
It depends on transaction volume, the number of periods and how quickly documents can be provided. After the initial assessment we agree a timeline with clear milestones, and we can prioritise the periods needed first for an upcoming filing or audit.
Will our books be ready for audit afterwards?
The aim is to produce complete, reconciled records with supporting schedules that an auditor can review efficiently. We prepare trial balances, reconciliations and key balance schedules, and can coordinate with your auditor on queries.
Books behind schedule?
Tell us how far behind your records are and what documents you have. We will review your situation and recommend a practical plan to bring your accounts up to date.
